We evaluated the effectiveness of physical rehabilitation vs non-rehabilitation in long-term care residents living with dementia to determine the impact on physical functioning and overall quality of life. A total of 33 trials were included in this review, 27 being randomized controlled trials and the remaining 6 being non-randomized trials. We found that with low certainty, physical rehabilitation may improve activities of daily living for individuals living with dementia in long-term care homes. The effectiveness of physical rehabilitation on functional tasks such as gait speed and quality of life was less certain, and future research is needed on the effects of physical rehabilitation for individuals with more advanced dementia.
