Research Study
Effect of a continuing education course about dementia for rehabilitation professionals on learner knowledge, attitudes, and confidence: a pre-post study
For practicing physiotherapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapy assistants, occupational therapy assistants, and kinesiologists in Canada with a minimum of 6 months of practice experience, who work with individuals with dementia regardless of the setting.

Introduction
Individuals living with dementia have unique strengths and needs which need to be considered when designing rehabilitation interventions. Care Approaches in Rehabilitation for Effective Support for Dementia (CARES-D) is a post-graduate course for rehabilitation professionals that fills the gap in education in working with people living with dementia. Working with individuals with dementia requires special knowledge and understanding of the disease. This course summarizes key approaches to effectively support caregivers and individuals with dementia in participating in rehabilitation interventions using evidence-based information on key topic areas identified as barriers to working with individuals with dementia from a rehabilitation perspective.
What is the purpose of this study?
We aim to analyze the effectiveness of CARES-D for rehabilitation professionals on learner knowledge, attitudes, and confidence of dementia by administering online questionnaires to:
- Assess changes in rehabilitation professionals’ knowledge about dementia
- Evaluate shifts in attitudes toward individuals with dementia
- Measure improvements in confidence in managing dementia care
- Gather participant feedback on the CARES-D training program
- Compare pre- and post-training outcomes to determine the program’s effectiveness
What will participants be asked to do?
You will be asked to complete the following:
- Online CARES-D course, including content modules, knowledge checks, workbook and course completion survey (6.5 hours)
- One short online demographic questionnaire before completing the CARES-D course (10 minutes)
- Three short online questionnaires before and after taking the CARES-D course (50 minutes)
The total estimated time for your participation in this research is 7.5 hours.
Participants will receive a $15 Amazon gift card.
